Bo Van Pelt seized a commanding lead in the opening round, carding a stunning 9-under par 62. Van Pelt’s round was nearly flawless, highlighted by eight birdies and a spectacular eagle on the par-five 11th.

Despite a lone bogey, his aggressive approach and hot putter allowed him to establish a two-stroke cushion over his nearest pursuers. His 62 marks one of the lowest opening rounds in the tournament’s history, setting a blistering pace for the field.

The chasing pack is led by Thongchai Jaidee and Retief Goosen, who share second place at 7-under par. Both players navigated the desert layout without a bogey, with Goosen in particular finding rhythm on the greens late in the afternoon.

Darren Clarke and Tommy Gainey remain in close contention at 6-under par, while Pádraig Harrington sits four shots back following a steady 66. The day was marked by high scoring across the board, though several stars, including Bernhard Langer, find themselves with work to do after middle-of-the-pack starts.
